Famous scientist Dr Pushpa Mitra Bhargava is dead…


Dr PM Bhargava, the founder-director of Hyderabad-based Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) died on 1st August. He was 89.

He belonged to the generation of nation building scientists, who built the edifice of Indian science. He was an internationally recognized molecular biologist, thinker, and institution builder.

His interests and engagements covered science as well as art and culture and their relation to society. He remained deeply engaged in social issues, particularly those relating to the impact of science on society in India and the world. 

His extraordinary energy and commitment will continue to always inspire scientists in future endeavours, said an official press release.

Bhargava is recipient of over 100 national and international honours and awards, including the Padma Bhushan in 1986 and the Legion d'Honneur in 1998 from then President of France.


Born in Rajasthan's Ajmer, Bhargava studied at Theosophical College, Lucknow and Queen's College, Varanasi and completed his BSc in 1944 in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.

Dr Bhargava set up the Centre of Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) in Hyderabad, Telangana. CCMB is a research organization in areas of modern biology. It was set up initially as a semi-autonomous centre on April 1, 1977 with the Biochemistry Division of the then Regional Research Laboratory (presently, Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, IICT) Hyderabad forming its nucleus and Dr P M Bhargava heading the new Centre.During 1981–82, CCMB was accorded the status of a full-fledged national laboratory with its own Executive Committee and Scientific Advisory Council. 

Dr Bhargava has been a well-known critic of Indian governmental policies, and has attained the post of Vice-Chairman in the National Knowledge Commission. He has also served as a member in the National Security Advisory Board and nominee of the Supreme Court of India on the Genetic Engineering Appraisal Committee of the Government of India.
